As Bilbao reports intensify, Tottenham must offload Fernando Llorente in January

Athletic Bilbao have stepped up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Fernando Llorente this week, with Bilbao’s sporting director telling that the club are interesting in bringing the forward back to San Mames.

With exit reports intensifying, Spurs must move to offload Llorente in January and avoid losing the back-up striker for free in the summer.

Although the Spaniard recently struck an eye-catching hat-trick against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup, Llorente’s time at Tottenham has been frustrating for the ex-Swansea man.

Due to the outstanding form of Harry Kane up front, Llorente’s opportunities have been severely limited, with the experienced centre-forward relegated to secondary cup competitions and rare league appearances.

Out of his 21 Premier League matches for Spurs, Llorente has started just a solitary match — an unacceptable statistic for a striker of his quality that reveals he must move on in the winter.

At 33 years of age, Llorente’s Tottenham contract expires this summer, and it seems extremely unlikely Spurs will extend his stay in north London.

In order to maximise their return off Fernando Llorente, Tottenham would do well to sell him to his former club in January, gaining some compensation from Bilbao for their aging second-choice striker.
