Arsene Wenger’s apparent Alexis Sanchez replacement option now eyed as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s successor

, Arsenal are interested in a deal to sign Dries Mertens from Napoli at the end of the season.

The Belgian star is all set to leave Napoli at the end of the campaign, with his contract due to expire at the end of June.

Considering he has scored 121 goals in 309 appearances since moving to Italy in 2013, the diminutive frontman will be a much-coveted commodity in the summer. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are named as being keen on his services.

His arrival would likely be as a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is continually being linked with a move away from The Emirates.

It seems to be a repeat theme that Arsenal should target Mertens as a replacement for their key forward.

, Arsenal were eyeing up Mertens as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez, who was all set to leave the club over the course of the next 12 months. An upcoming buy-out clause in his Napoli deal made the Belgian available for just £26.5 million, and Arsene Wenger reportedly wanted him as the replacement for the Chilean.

In the end, Mertens stuck around at Napoli and Arsenal signed Aubameyang the following summer.

Now, it appears that Arsenal might be looking to replace the Gabon international with the Belgian.
