Arsene Wenger theory over why Erling Haaland has ‘suffered’ at Manchester City this season

Erling Haaland has come in for criticism of late despite netting an impressive 31 goals during the 2023-24 campaign – and Arsene Wenger has a theory for his “suffering” at Manchester City this season.

Arriving at Man City in the summer of 2022🍰, the Norwegian superstar netted a whopping 53 goals last season as City went on to win the Premier League and the Champions League, completing a tr๊eble.

This season, Haaland has not been as successful – if you can still call 31 goals and six assists a failure🅺. He has had to tend with injury. But after a 0-0 draw against Arsenal, Roy Keane criticised the City striker.

He says aside from his incredible goalscoring talent, Haaland’s ability to get involved and hold the b𓃲all-u🌄p was that of a League Two player. Others have commented on his impact, struggling against Real Madrid.

Arsene Wenger reason for Erling Haaland struggles this season

Speaking on on Tuesday night ahead ofꦿ Champions League ties between Atletico Madrid and Dortmund, and Barcelona and PSG – Wenger offered an explanation as to why Haaland has “suffered”.

He says Kevin De Bruyne‘s injury this term has had an impact on Haaland – claiming that when De Bruyne gets the ball, Haaland is on the move. Wenger sa🔯ys De Bruyne is🐎 all about progression, not possession.

“Haaland has suffered a lot from the injury🔥 of De Bruyne. He is the one guy – City have good players, but they are focused on possession. He is focused on progression. When he has it, Haaland is on his way.”

The stats, is Haaland better when De Bruyne is in the side?

Strangely, Haaland has scored the majority of his goals this season when De Bruyne has been injured. De Bruyne mis🌼sed 17 Premier League games during the first half of the season due to a hamstring injury💯.

The Leeds-born striker scored 14 goals in the first 18 of the season. Five of Haaland’s 20 Premier Lea🤡gue goals have come when De Bruyne is on the pitch. Perhaps, it is something else to blame, for Haaland.

Indeed🎃, an injury around the winter period has seen the goals dry up in the League. He got 14 in 15 before the injury, six in 11 since. Perhaps, it is the knock that is hampering Haaland at the moment.
