Arsene Wenger has theory over why Gabriel Jesus is not scoring enough goals at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has had his say on why he thinks Gabriel Jesus is not scoring enough goals at Arsenal.

The legendary Frenchman, who managed Arsenal for over two decades, had a number of elite goalscorers in his teams at Highbury and the Emirates.

From Ian Wright, Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry to the likes of Robin van Persie and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his forwards knew how to score.

Arsenal striker Jesus, however, has had his struggles in front of goal, and Wenger thinks he knows why.

Arsene Wenger explains why Gabriel Jesus is not scoring enough goals at Arsenal

Arsenal signed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City before the start of the 2022/23 season.

The Brazilian came in with a lot of hype, and he started the campaign in magnificent style. He scored six goals and provided three assists in his first nine league games to help Arsenal become title contenders.

However, since then, Jesus has struggled in front of goal and has received a lot of criticism. He managed just six more goals in the Premier League in the remainder of last season, and he has fallen behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order this time around.

Arsene Wenger has delivered his verdict on Jesus now.

The Frenchman, who is one of the greatest managers in the history of football, believes the Brazilian is actually capable of scoring a lot more than he has done since he joined Arsenal.

The reason he has struggled in front of goal, according to Wenger, is because of the amount of games he has missed due to injuries.

Speaking to Freddie Ljungberg on his Instagram, Wenger said: “They (Arsenal) have no Thierry Henry at the moment because I think Gabriel Jesus is a lot injured.

“There are more goals in him than what you see at the moment. You know that, what the top, top level doesn’t tolerate is in and out. The guys who make history are the guys who are consistently there.

Ronaldo and Messi played for 15 years, 50-60 games a year.”

How many games has Gabriel Jesus missed at Arsenal due to injury?

Gabriel Jesus offers a lot for Arsenal every time he plays up front, but because he is a striker, people only judge him on the number of goals he scores.

The Brazil international will be the first to admit that he doesn’t find the back of the net enough. It is one area of his game that he really needs to improve.

However, Arsene Wenger’s comments above make a lot of sense when you look at the number of games Jesus has missed due to injury since he joined Arsenal.

The former Manchester City man missed 15 games last season due to a knee issue he suffered at the World Cup in Qatar. He has had four different spells on the sidelines this season and has missed a total of 16 games.

That’s 31 games missed in less than two seasons, which is not great at all. Wenger is right, Jesus has been in and out a lot, and that definitely has impacted his goal return.
