Arsenal’s interest in Pope may make Tottenham pay for previous dithering
Arsenal want to sign Burnley’s Nick Pope to be their second-choice goalkeeper next season,
Pope was outstanding last term and his form deservedly earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for last summer’s World Cup.
But he has struggled this year with a dislocated shoulder and upon his return to fitness, has found Tom Heaton and Joe Hart blocking his path to the Clarets first-team.
And that has meant that the Gunners have spotted an opportunity to bring in Pope to replace the retiring Petr Cech as Sean Dyche has admitted one goalkeeper will have to go.
But Arsenal’s bitter rivals Tottenham were back in October 2018 with a swoop for Pope, with their own backup Michel Vorm not quite up to scratch.
Spurs did not get the deal done and although Paulo Gazzaniga has emerged since then, it would not be ideal for them to see a former target move across town.
Tottenham’s transfer inactivity has been a source of much debate of late and although Arsenal getting a backup goalkeeper ahead of them may not appear to be the biggest blow, it may be handy to have genuine, experienced backup for Hugo Lloris, who has struggled at times this season.
