Report: Arsenal want ‘outstanding’ 23-year-old, Klopp thinks he’s ‘incredible’

Arsenal are targeting a summer transfer for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to .

Mikel Arteta has set his sights on Bramall Lane as he strives to overcome a crisis between the sticks. Ramsdale was a pivotal part of the Blades side that was relegated from the Premier League last season.

But the Gunners are assessing a move for the 23-year-old amid doubt in the future of Bernd Leno. The German shot-stopper’s understudy, Mat Ryan, is also unlikely to return after spending the second half of the campaign at the Emirates on loan from Brighton.

Both Leno and Ryan departing will leave Arteta needing to sign a new number one in the summer transfer market. Arsenal have shown an interest in Ajax ace Andre Onana, but the Cameroon international is gaining significant admirers, per .

Arsenal could now turn their efforts to signing Ramsdale and offering the England international a continued Premier League stay. Gareth Southgate brought the Chesterton-born goalkeeper into his Euro 2020 squad earlier this week to .

However, Sheffield United would demand £20million to sell Ramsdale. The Blades want to make back the fee they paid Bournemouth only last year, when brought in as Henderson’s replacement.

TBR’s view: Ramsdale not the worst Arsenal can do

Ramsdale may not be the best goalkeeper Arsenal can target after two relegations in as many seasons. But the Sheffield United shot-stopper is also not the worst having stood out at points last season.

The Three Lions squad member endured a difficult start to life at Bramall Lane in a poor Sheffield United side. However, he begun to turn things around by the winter and began to turn in magnificent displays to give the Blades hope of staying up.

Sheffield United’s relegation would have been sealed sooner without Ramsdale showing why he is one of England’s top goalkeepers. Only Sam Johnstone (166) made more saves (147) in the Premier League last season, while Ramsdale also ranked second for saves inside the box (88), per .

Ramsdale’s efforts to keep Liverpool from scoring in February also drew praise from Jurgen Klopp, having produced saves he was not entitled to make. “Ramsdale played an incredible game, few outstanding saves,” the German said, via .
