Arsenal star Martinelli and Cech applaud Aston Villa’s Martinez on Instagram
Emi Martinez has posted on Instagram after the Aston Villa star was voted the club’s Player of the Season, following a brilliant first term in the Midlands since his move from Arsenal – and plenty have reacted to his comments.
Martinez, 28, chose to swap Arsenal for Villa after finally breaking into the Gunners side. Previously, the Argentine had spent 10 years in the reserves – managing just 15 first-team appearances for the North London club in that time.
But last season, he was handed 24 appearances by Mikel Arteta and quickly became established as the number one. However, Arsenal chose to sell Martinez and place their faith in Bernd Leno – a decision which has been criticised.
Indeed, it looks even more of a poor decision after Villa announced their Player of the Season was Martinez – above the likes of Jack Grealish, Ollie Watkins, John McGinn, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings. He posted on Instagram.
It comes after playing all 38 Premier League matches for Villa this season, keeping an impressive 15 clean sheets for a side that finished in 17th place and survived by the skin of their teeth during 2019-20. He conceded 46 times.
Plenty applauded the Argentine for his form – not least ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech, who played alongside Martinez at Arsenal. Current Gunners star Gabriel Martinelli told Martinez that it was “very deserved, brother”.
