Arsenal should be wary of Jerome Boateng move amid Willian struggles

Arsenal are interested in signing Jerome Boateng when his Bayern Munich contract expires next summer, .

It may come as a surprise to some that Boateng’s contract is reportedly set to not be renewed. The 32-year-old has started six of Bayern’s seven Bundesliga fixtures this season.

So it would appear that it could prove to be a major coup for any side who manages to secure his signature in the coming months.

However, perhaps Mikel Arteta now has reason to keep his options open if he is determined to sign a new centre-back.

Should Arsenal sign Boateng next summer, it will be the second year in a row in which they have signed a 32-year-old on a free transfer.

This summer, it was Willian who arrived at the Emirates. At the time, the move appeared to be an incredibly shrewd piece of business. Although that he is earning ÂŁ220,000-a-week in North London.

Willian awaiting first assist since opening day

He scored 11 goals and contributed nine assists in all competitions during his final season for Chelsea.

And in fairness to the Brazilian, he could still come good. But so far, there is surely little question that he has been an underwhelming signing. He has not provided an assist since the opening day of the season.

Boateng has been one of the world’s best defenders for some time. And it would currently be difficult to argue with those who believe that he could tick a lot of boxes for Arsenal.

But Willian’s struggles perhaps offer a reminder that older players can struggle to recapture previous form when they make a move after a long spell with one particular club.

And those suggesting that there is little risk attached given Boateng’s contract situation may be wise to keep in mind the criticism that has still come Willian’s way in recent times.

Boateng may prove to be a masterstroke signing if Arsenal land him. But it is still a gamble.
