Arsenal round-up: Bayern cool Sanchez interest; rivals join Mbappe race; league rule could be broken

Bayern Munich have cooled their interest in Alexis Sanchez, with Yannick Carrasco emerging as their priority attacking target. They have been one of the clubs that have been heavily linked with the Chilean international as he approaches the final year of his contract with the Gunners.

According to , the Bundesliga club have switched their attentions to Carrasco, which has put a move for the Arsenal attacker on the back burner.

This does increase the chances of the attacker remaining with Arsenal, as Bayern Munich were seen as the most likely destination for the Chilean. The Gunners won’t want to sell the player to a rival Premier League club and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Sanchez’s future has been the topic of many newspaper columns over the last few months and it is likely to continue to be one of the main focuses of the transfer window as long as it remains unclear.

Liverpool have joined Real Madrid and Arsenal in the race for Kylian Mbappe. The  report that Jurgen Klopp is prepared to go over £100 million if required and that the club are determined to be there pitching for the player. Monaco have softened their stance on his possible departure and the Reds have been making discreet enquiries about the teenager.

The forward has only two years left on his contract and it will be difficult for the Ligue 1 champions to keep hold of him if a big offer is submitted.

Arsenal have always been outsiders for the signature of Mbappe, but they will remain confident that they can attract him to North London if he chooses for the Premier League. Arsene Wenger is a huge draw for young players and Mbappe will be interested in working with the Gunners’ boss. Furthermore, the teenager will be attracted to living in London and geography could also play a part if he chooses to come to England.

Finally, Arsenal risk breaching Premier League wage rules if Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil both sign massive new deals. The two players are important to the club’s future and the Gunners are desperate to keep both of them for next season and beyond.

report that even if the Gunners do manage to agree on new contracts for both, they may be forced to sell squad players to ensure they meet the short-term cost control regulations. Teams in the English top-flight are allowed to increase their wage budget by £7 million each year, but the Gunners could increase theirs by £15 million if both players agree to new deals.

This is an interesting development and shows the potential cost to Arsenal if they are to agree on huge new contracts with both players. It does remain unlikely that Ozil and Sanchez will both agree to extend their current deals, but it is a possibility and it could potentially harm them in the short term as they would need to drastically reduce their squad size.

Taking this into account, it could actually be better for the club if they don’t extend the contracts of both players.
