Arsenal reportedly want English star that Emi Martinez labelled a ‘nightmare’ in 2020

Arsenal are reportedly looking at a move to sign Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins – and Emi Martinez’s verdict will surely have Gunners fans excited.

Watkins, 25, has been excellent for Villa since joining the Midlands side in the summer of 2020. In his first season, he netted 14 goals in 37 games.

He also laid on five assists. This term, it has been more difficult – perhaps due to the loss of Jack Grealish and the added competition of Danny Ings.

His first goal of the season came on Sunday, during a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. Watkins failed to score or create a single goal in four games.

Days after his first 21-22 goal, Arsenal are looking at Watkins over a possible move – a player that once said he dreams of joining Arsenal.

Martinez spoke about Watkins in 2020. He heaped praise on the Gunners target, labelling the striker a “nightmare”.

“He’s been outstanding for us, not just the goal-scoring and the finishing but his work ethic,” “He’s a nightmare for defenders.”

Martinez on Watkins: Why Arsenal need Villa star…

Arsenal need a striker. First and foremost, they need a player to lead the line. Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah looks set to leave the club.

Both are out of contract next summer and could go in January for a cut-price fee, or leave for nothing in under a year’s time. A striker is crucial.

£75k-a-week () Watkins is ideal – not just because he is a proven goalscorer. But because Watkins matches the new Arsenal identity.

He is hungry to play for Arsenal, not just pick up a pay cheque. While he might not be the finished article, he will grow at Arsenal.

That is the case for many of Arteta’s signings. Watkins gives Arsenal a different look, a new way to attack. He would be a stunning addition.
