Arsenal reportedly make offer to sign player compared to Mesut Ozil in 2013

Arsenal have reportedly contacted the entourage of AC Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and made an offer to sign the Turkish midfielder – a player that was likened to Mesut Ozil back in 2013 by one of his former club’s legendary figures.

Calhanoglu, 27, is enjoying a stunning campaign with Milan – clocking up 18 goal involvements in 34 league and cup appearances. The 55-time Turkey international has scored seven and created 11, helping Milan climb to second in Serie A.

However, he is out of contract in the summer. Arsenal and Chelsea are in contact with his agents, making an offer for the German-born ace – but both are trailing Juventus in the race to sign him. He wants £105,000 a week.

Back in 2013, Calhanoglu had left Karlsruher – the club where he spent his latter teenage years and broke into professional football. Following his exit, Karlsruher legend Winfried Schafer compared him to Arsenal icon Ozil.

“Calhanoglu is the new Ozil,” Schafer – who played for and managed Karlsruer – in 2013. “Hakan is an exceptional boy. He has a lot of confidence and courage. He is simply great. Like Mesut, he can go right to the top.”

TBR’s view – Calhanoglu would be a simply sensational signing

Given his form at Milan, he is up there with the most in-form playmakers in European football. A set-piece specialist, Calhanoglu provides match-winning moments all by himself. His ability to score from long-range makes him a matchwinner.

On a free, it is an absolute no-brainer for most clubs in Europe. He can change Arsenal, take them back into the top four and finally replace the influence they previously had on matches with Ozil in their side. £105,000 a week is also somewhat cheap.
