Arsenal need Germany defender Ginter more than bitter rivals Tottenham

North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are both interested in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter,

They that both sides are on the hunt for central defensive reinforcements this summer and could be set for a transfer tussle over the Germany international.

that Spurs have been interested in Ginter since he moved to Monchengladbach in 2017, from Borussia Dortmund, who travel to Wembley for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash later this month.

Ginter still has plenty of time to improve at just 25 but with 23 international caps to his name, he has plenty of experience – so which of the sides needs him more?

Put simply, Unai Emery needs Ginter far more than Mauricio Pochettino does. Spurs have a thin squad but they do have a functioning defensive unit; familiar with each other and attuned to their high-tempo gameplan.

Arsenal do not; the defensive frailties that Emery inherited from Arsene Wenger have come to the fore as the season has worn on – especially away from home – and injuries to top performers such as Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin hasn’t helped.

The summer arrival of Sokratis helps but more is needed and that will give the red half of north London the greater desire to make sure they come out on top if a transfer battle heats up this summer.
