Arsenal made move to sign former Chelsea and Real Madrid striker in the final days of the transfer window
Arsenal were actively looking to sign a new striker in the winter transfer window.
The Gunners lost Gabriel Jesus to a season-ending injury in January, and that left them short of options up front as Bukayo Saka was out injured at that point too.
Mikel Arteta publicly claimed that his side needed help in attack, and Arsenal explored opportunities to sign several players.
One surprise name has now been revealed.
What happened after Arsenal spoke to Alvaro Morata’s agents about signing him
Alvaro Morata was available for a transfer in the final days of the window.
The Spaniard, once of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus, is on AC Milan’s books these days, but the Italian giants were prepared to let him go.
have now revealed that Arsenal held talks to sign him.
When the Gunners flew to Spain for their Champions League clash against Girona, the report claims that discussions took place with the representatives of two players.
One was Joan Garcia, the Espanyol goalkeeper, and the other was Morata.
The report claims that Arsenal were interested in signing the Spain striker on loan, and the indications were that Milan would’ve been open to an agreement with the Gunners.
However, Arsenal did not have the same conviction as Galatasaray in their pursuit of Morata, and the Turkish giants won the race to sign him in the end.
What Morata would’ve bought to Arsenal
Morata is not the most prolific striker in the world.
The Spaniard struggled in England during his time with Chelsea, scoring just 24 goals in 72 appearances. He missed several big chances as well.
However, Arsenal don’t have a natural centre-forward available at the club right now, and Morata’s experience and quality would’ve helped take some burden off Kai Havertz up top.
But, Arsenal decided against signing anybody in the end, and only time will tell if that decision will cost them in the remainder of the season.
