Arsenal made contact to sign ‘one of the most talented young players in Europe’ before Mikel Merino deal
Arsenal considered a move for a highly-rated young player before he joined another Premier League club this summer.
The North Londoners have been pretty quiet in the summer transfer window but after adding Riccardo Calafiori to their ranks, they’re now set to complete a second deal.
Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino is on the verge of linking up with Mikel Arteta’s squad, though, it could’ve been so different.
It has just come to light that Arsenal made contact to sign an alternative midfield target before advancing for Merino.

Arsenal made contact to sign Amadou Onana
According to , Arsenal made contact with Everton over the potential signing of midfielder Amadou Onana, who is considered ‘one of the most talented young players in Europe’ per the .
Ultimately the 22-year-old joined Aston Villa in a £50m deal and The Gunners have now advanced a move for Merino, who is expected to be significantly cheaper.
Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was also considered but his £100m release clause was deemed too high.
Douglas Luiz and Joao Neves, who is set to join PSG, were also on their midfield shortlist.
Mikel Merino was the right choice
All things considered, the imminent signing of Merino is certainly the right choice for The Gunners, who will now have more funds to outlay on an attacker.
The Spain international is expected to cost around £25m which is certainly below his true market value.
But, Sociedad has little choice but to sanction his sale for a cut price as he’s out of contract in a year’s time.
Now, Arsenal are expected to focus on bringing in a versatile forward.
