Arsenal-linked 26-year-old centre-back deemed ‘solid, reliable and dependable’ by Joachim Low

Arsenal are reported to have made enquiries about Matthias Ginter, a player who has previously come for huge praise by Germany manager Joachim Low.

The 26-year-old defender played a crucial role in an impressive season for Borussia Monchengladbach, in which they secured a Bundesliga top-four finish and Champions League football.

Ginter’s great form, which has seen him become a regular for the German national team, seems to have caught the attention of several top European clubs.

According to , Arsenal and Chelsea have enquired about the availability of the Monchengladbach centre-back on a free transfer for next summer.

However, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are said to be in the race for Ginter’s signature in the current transfer window.

Furthermore, his contract will apparently renew automatically if he makes more than 25 appearances for Gladbach next term, while the club is said to already be in talks over a new deal.

“I have the feeling that he’s undervalued by the public,” Low told the Bundesliga last November after Ginter scored in a 4-0 win over Belarus. “When he’s played with us, he’s always done his job well.

“As a coach, you know what to expect from him. He’s dependable and he’s able to do what we want him to do, which is to help build the play up from the back.

“He’s improved defensively too. He has a certain calmness about him, which is what makes him so solid, reliable and dependable. I’m particularly happy that he was able to score such a beautiful goal today.”

Ginter is a top-class player whose heroics for club and country have rightly put him in the spotlight.

For Arsenal – and indeed Chelsea – to enquire about him as a free agent next summer seems odd, given he’s likely to be snapped up sooner than that, judging by the interest in him.

If the Gunners are really serious – particularly considering Shkodran Mustafi is expected to be out until October – they need to be moving in for him in the current transfer window.

Otherwise they can probably just forget about him as there will be clubs willing to pay big money to snap him up.
