Arsenal would be silly to miss out on Jonathan Tah after classy showing against Rangers

Rangers were in action against Bayer Leverkusen last night and for Arsenal fans, they might have watched defender Jonathan Tah with relative intrigue.

reported last month that Arsenal are considering triggering the £34 million release clause for the German defender.

Arsenal will probably look to strengthen their back four ahead of next season. David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and Pablo Mari are the current centre-backs at the club.

It wouldn’t be completely unrealistic to expect at least two of the current crop to depart and that would leave Arsenal with a void to fill.

If the Gunners were casting an eye over the defender at Ibrox last night they’d have been impressed with what they saw.

Boss Mikel Arteta has been keen to revert to the ball-playing front-foot aggression of the Arsenal teams of old since he arrived as the club’s manager.

If he is after a centre-half to complement that strategy then signing Tah might be a stroke of genius.

Last night the 24-year-old completed 91% of his passes, making one important tackle during the game

Tah has nine caps for Germany and is a vastly important part of Leverkusen’s side.

The elegant player has 174 appearances under his belt and interest looks like being high during the summer.

If the Gunners are going to add another centre-back it needs to be one better than anything they currently have.

Although he’s never played in the Premier League, he is a defender who makes very few, if any, mistakes.

Arteta would love having a player so useful with the ball at the heart of his defence and triggering the release clause seems like a no-brainer for the Gunners.
