Report: Arsenal want Jerome Boateng on loan and eye Dayot Upamecano for the summer

Arsenal are thought to be considering a move for Jerome Boateng this month, with Dayot Upamecano a primary summer target for the Gunners.

are reporting that Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his defensive ranks and are hoping to sign the Bayern Munich man on loan.

Boateng has fallen out of favour at the German giants this season. He has played just 10 games in the league and a switch to Arsenal could be attractive.

It would seem that a link to Upamecano simply won’t go away. The Gunners will need to fork out £50 million for his signature and that doesn’t seem feasible during this transfer window.

Arsenal drew 1-1 with Sheffield United on Saturday. The game highlighted the need for a lift in Arteta’s dressing room with draws becoming all too frequent.

Boateng could be the experienced head that Arsenal needs in this window. The 31-year-old has 76 caps for Germany and spent 12 months at Manchester City earlier in his career.

Upamecano would represent an attractive summer signing.

He has been a revelation for RB Leipzig, helping them to the top of the Bundesliga, four points clear of Bayern.

The 21-year-old is strong, quick and takes a no-nonsense approach towards defending.

He missed the first four games of the season with a knee injury but has now played 14 league games on the spin.

Upgrade

If he does arrive, however, he could be a game-changing addition for the Gunners.

In the meantime, Boateng would certainly represent an improvement on anything Arsenal currently have at the back.

Arteta hasn’t been in his first managerial position for long. It will delight supporters, however, that he has already identified the defence as an area in need of strengthening.
