Jack Wilshere names the fastest player he ever played with at Arsenal

Arsenal icon Jack Wilshere has revealed that Theo Walcott was the fastest teammate he had at the Emirates.

Indeed, the midfielder – who’s currently training with the Gunners – says he’s not played with anyone quicker to this day.

The 30-year-old was speaking to about Arsenal’s famous victory over Barcelona in 2011.

Andrey Arshavin and Robin van Persie scored for the Gunners to help seal a 2-1 win.

Wilshere and Walcott were also instrumental in the victory, which took place 11 years ago this week.

The midfielder revealed how crucial Walcott’s pace was in getting Arsenal up the pitch when they won the ball back.

“In that game he was really important for us because we spent a lot of the time without the ball,” said Wilshere.

“Defending deep and he was our way out, I remember winning the ball back a few times and giving it to him, his speed would get us up the pitch.”

Walcott joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2006, one of the most highly rated youngsters in England at the time.

Indeed, he made the England squad for that year’s World Cup in Germany, at just 17 years of age.

Walcott spent 12 years at Arsenal, making 398 competitive appearances and registering 108 goals and 78 assists.

He then joined Everton in January 2018 before returning to Southampton last summer.

“Unbelievable”

TalkSPORT also asked Wilshere whether he felt Walcott reached his full potential.

“Well, he scored 100 goals for Arsenal,” replied Wilshere.

“I think he took time to fulfil it, but there was a time where he was a massive player for us just before when all the talk about his contract was going on and he wanted to play up front, and he played up front for a few games, scored loads of goals.

“I remember playing in one game he scored a hat-trick, he scored four [against Newcastle in a Premier League match in 2012], he scored one unbelievable solo goal.

“I really enjoyed playing with him, for a midfielder when you picked the ball up deep and you’ve got him running in behind, to this day I’ve not played with anyone quicker.”
