Arsenal have started talks to sign £20m player with initial discussions taking place
Arsenal have been looking for a new midfielder for a little while now.
The Gunners have been linked with a number of potential options in the middle of the park with the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes strongly linked.
Mikel Merino is another player who has been strongly linked with Arsenal heading into this summer, and a move to the Emirates could be on the cards.
Speaking on the , Dean Jones has been discussing Arsenal’s interest in Merino, and while he didn’t go into detail, the journalist says that something has now happened with the £20m man and the Gunners.

Arsenal and Mikel Merino are progressing
Jones shared what he knows about the Spaniard.
“While we’re on Arsenal, I would look out for Mikel Merino as well. That is true,” Jones said.
“They have looked at a lot of midfielders recently, Zubimendi is one, Onana, Douglas Luiz.
“There is something in Merino. I don’t know how far it has gone yet, I think it will become clear quite soon, but something has happened, at least an initial discussion on that one,” Jones said.
Merino signing would be a risk
Mikel Merino was brilliant at Euro 2024, but this signing would be something of a risk from Arsenal.
Let’s not forget, Merino has been in the Premier League before with Newcastle United, and it’s fair to say that he didn’t fare so well when he played for the Magpies.
Ultimately, the Premier League proved to be too much for Merino when he was on Tyneside, and while he has seriously improved since then, Arsenal wouldn’t be getting a player with a guaranteed track record here.
Arsenal do need to bolster their midfield, but it’s hard not to feel that there are better options than Merino out there.
By the sounds of things, this is one to watch for the Gunners as the transfer window hots up.
