Arsenal fans will love what Lee Dixon has said about defender Takehiro Tomiyasu

that Arsenal summer signing Takehiro Tomiyasu has done “brilliantly” since joining the Gunners from Bologna. Dixon even compared the Gunners ace to Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso.

Tomiyasu, 23, has started 15 of the 16 Premier League games Arsenal have played since his arrival – missing the 5-0 win over Norwich due to a positive test. The Japan international has been solid on the right flank.

With Hector Bellerin moving to Real Madrid and Arsenal opting to sign Tomiyasu instead of Emerson Royal – who joined Tottenham – many had reservations. But for less than £20million, he has proven to be a bargain.

Discussing the 28-time Japan star’s start to life at Arsenal, Gunners legend Dixon was full of praise. He compared him to Alonso and stated there is still work to do defensively – but that Tomiyasu has been superb so far.

“He [Tomiyasu] has certainly caught the eye, there is no doubt about that,” Dixon said. “He’s done brilliantly. He has not got the stature of a typical full back. Having said that, Alonso is tall and a similar stature to him.

“Very good at coming out with the ball. His link-up play with the midfield and forwards is great. He is an athlete who gets up and down brilliantly well, great in the air. He has still got some work to do as far as defending.”

Dixon on Tomiyasu: Arsenal star arguably Arsenal’s best summer signing

That is, because he only cost around £15.5million () in the summer. Yes, Aaron Ramsdale has been superb – but he cost Arsenal almost double. Ben White too, but at £50million, more than three times Tomiyasu.

The bargain fee that brought Tomiyasu to North London makes him Edu’s best bit of business in the summer – a move that nearly did not happen, with Spurs also keen. He also offers versatility, playing centre-back for Japan.
