Arsenal fans want Champions League manager to replace Mikel Arteta

Some Arsenal fans aren’t convinced with Mikel Arteta as the club’s manager. Last night, plenty took to Twitter to discuss the possibility of appointing Gian Piero Gasperini.

The Atalanta boss was in the spotlight as his team took on Manchester United. For 53 minutes things were going swimmingly. After that, things started to unravel.

Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral had the Serie A outfit 2-0 up at Old Trafford. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo ensured a superb comeback win for United.

What’s the story with Arsenal and Arteta?

Appointed to replace Unai Emery in November 2019, the former Gunners central midfielder was viewed by plenty as the saviour. A head coach as opposed to a manager and someone who would coach the current crop to be better.

Arteta had spent several years honing his coaching credentials under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Arsenal gig was deemed as the right time to step out on his own though.

After three successive defeats at the start of this season, supporters were sharpening their knives. Many wanted him gone; with Arsenal failing to score during those three games.

A mini-revival has now ensued. The Gunners are unbeaten in five matches, although they’re still playing catch up when it comes to the Premier League table.

During 96 games in charge of Arsenal, the Arteta has won 50 of them. As a result, he has a win percentage of and plenty of supporters are growing disgruntles.

Is Arteta in any immediate danger at Arsenal?

It has to be said that he’s probably not. Having spent a fortune in the summer though, the landscape could change almost on a monthly basis at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta is desperate for some consistency. With that in mind, a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at home on Monday night didn’t do much to silence his critics.

Arsenal will be looking to get back into Europe this season. Given their current sporadic form, that looks like a long shot at the moment and as a result, the board will be getting panicky.

The Gunners backed Arteta with a healthy transfer budget in the summer. Based on that, Arsenal are going to need to improve in the coming months if Arteta is to keep his job.

Would Gasperini would have an impact at Arsenal?

Theoretically, if Arteta was to leave the club, the Gunners would be foolish not to look at Gasperini to replace him at Arsenal.

The 63-year-old is a vastly experienced manager and he’s working wonders with Atalanta; transforming them into regular Champions League qualifiers against the odds.

He has a win ratio of 52% with the Serie A outfit, although he has managed 250 games for the club. During that period his team has scored 497 goals, conceding 298.

That perhaps tells a story in itself. His teams simply love to attack. His style of play isn’t too dissimilar to that of Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds and defensively his teams can sometimes be vulnerable.

What have Arsenal fans said about Gasperini?

With his team winning 2-0 at the Theatre of Dreams, Arsenal were looking at the Atalanta boss through misty eyes. They were dreaming of their beloved club playing in such a free-flowing manner.

Of course, things went south in the second 45, with his team nothing short of abysmal defensively. That didn’t stop Arsenal fans from wanting the Italian boss in charge of their team, however.

Here is what the fan base had to say on Twitter about Gasperini and whether he’d be a good fit for Arsenal.
