Arsenal fans think there was a major refereeing error in Liverpool’s win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup

Arsenal fans were left fuming with a major refereeing decision which went in Liverpool’s favour in their 2-1 win over Southampton.

Arsenal and Liverpool both booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with wins over Crystal Palace and Southampton. The Gunners came from behind to beat Palace, whilst the Reds edged past the Saints 2-1 at St Mary’s.

However, the Gunners have been left in uproar after watching the closing stages of the Liverpool game in which Simon Hooper made a controversial call. Arsenal fans claim one of their players was shown a red card for a similar offence.

Should Jarrel Quansah have seen red vs Southampton?

Arsenal fans cannot believe that Jarell Quansah was not sent off for the denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The defender was the last man and hauled down Mateus Fernandes just outside the area in the 93rd minute.

Simon Hooper waved play on and decided the incident wasn’t even worthy of a foul. Both players were strongly contesting for the ball although it does seem that Quansah’s arms were all over Fernandes.

Given there was no VAR, the referee had to decide in real-time whether Fernandes was in control of the ball and whether Caoimhin Kelleher would have got their first. Kelleher was retreating so that was not the case but the ball was bouncing around so it’s perhaps not a clear opportunity for Fernandes.

What are Arsenal fans saying about the incident?

Arsenal fans reckon the incident was similar to one in which William Saliba was shown a straight red card against Bournemouth. The Frenchman was sent off for bringing down Evanlison following a review from VAR.

The Gunners’ supporters are convinced that Saliba was shown red for ‘way less’ in their defeat to Bournemouth back in October. After the Liverpool game, Arsenal fans took to X to vent their frustration.

One fan slammed PGMOL by saying: “So, to recap… Saliba’s yellow was upgraded to red based on a ‘clear and obvious error’ but Quansah’s was no foul despite committing a worse offence 40 yards closer to the goal. Nice work, PGMOL.”

Another Arsenal supporter said: “Saliba was incorrectly sent off for doing this on the halfway line with a covering defender in position to recover and intercept. How is doing it on the edge of the box with no other defenders around somehow not only not a red, but somehow not even a FOUL?”

This supporter claimed the incident was worse than Saliba’s foul: “I mean Saliba at Bournemouth was probably less contact and also on the halfway line and got straight red but fair enough…”

In response to a question asking whether Quansah should have been sent off, an Arsenal fan replied: “Of course he should. This is worse than Saliba’s red card vs Bournemouth. Quansah is the last man with no one around him and right in front of goal. The goalkeeper not coming out either.”
