A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Renato Sanches following his latest international display – with plenty of Gunners fans suggesting that the club look at signing the midfielder.
Portugal will have to go through the play-offs if they hope to qualify for next year’s World Cup.
They were beaten by Serbia on a dramatic night in Lisbon. Portugal had taken the lead in the winner takes all game.
However, the visitors equalised shortly after the half-hour mark. And Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged the winner in the final moments of the match to ensure that it was Serbia who topped the group.
The decisive goal came shortly after Fernando Santos had replaced Sanches with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.
And some may ultimately question whether that decision was one that contributed as many on social media felt that the 24-year-old had been outstanding.
In fact, it was Sanches who gave Portugal the lead after two minutes. It was only the midfielder’s third goal for his country.
Of course, Sanches has had to reestablish himself as a key man in the national team. But it certainly does appear that he has got his career back on track in more recent times.
Arsenal fans laud Renato Sanches after display for Portugal
It seems a long time ago that he looked almost completely lost while on loan from Bayern Munich at Swansea City.
He has been superb since moving to Lille in 2019. Obviously, he helped the Ligue 1 side go on and win the league title last year.
And in the wake of his display for Portugal, plenty of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to suggest that they would love to see him signed in the future.
No Portugal player won more tackles than Sanches against Serbia, . Meanwhile, he also completed two successful dribbles. Only Bernardo Silva managed more.
Arsenal will surely want to think about strengthening their options in the middle of the park in one of the upcoming windows.
Mikel Arteta does have a number of quality options. However, it does appear that the Gunners could improve the depth they have.
Players such as Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka have come in for a lot of criticism during their time at the Emirates. Meanwhile, Albert Sambi Lokonga is still finding his feet following his summer switch.
Sanches is now at an age where he could be coming into the peak years of his career. And having seemingly moved on from some of the difficulties he endured a few years ago, it is hard to see him sticking around with Lille for too much longer.
‘What a player’
With that in mind, some Arsenal fans have implored the likes of Arteta and Edu to have a look at a potential move for the Portuguese.
They believe that he would be a brilliant signing. And of course, it is always dangerous to not make a move for potential targets before a major tournament has begun – though Portugal still need to make sure that they are going to be in Qatar.
