Arsenal fans react as Fabrizio Romano confirms Gunners tried to sign Barcelona player
that Arsenal tried to sign Barcelona full-back Junior Firpo in the January transfer window, but the player chose to remain – and Gunners fans have responded on Twitter.
Firpo, 24, is some way down the pecking order at Barcelona with Ronald Koeman preferring to use Jordi Alba on the left side of the Barcelona defence. It has limited ex-Betis man Firpo to just 12 outings in all competitions this season.
Arsenal, meanwhile, allowed Sead Kolasinac to return to Schalke on loan to help his old side try and escape relegation from the Bundesliga. Shkodran Mustafi has since joined the German club, leaving Arsenal without cover on the left side.
Kieran Tierney remains first choice, while Bukayo Saka can do a job at left-back. But the Gunners lacked cover and Romano has since claimed on his Here We Go podcast that Arsenal made a late attempt to sign the Dominican Republic defender.
“Arsenal were trying for Junior Firpo on loan with a buy option. Paying a loan fee & his salary. Barcelona were open to the move. But the player for personal reasons had the preference of staying in Barcelona & moving next summer,”
Firpo has a contract at Barcelona until the summer of 2024, signing a five-year deal when he joined the club for £16.5million () from Betis – having impressed in his 43 senior outings for the La Liga side. He had a hand in 12 goals.
Arsenal fans have since responded to the reported news that their club made an attempt to land Firpo on loan with a permanent option included – and many believe he would have been a good addition for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Intriguing signing. We require a back up to Tierney and a possible replacement for Bellerin. Logic suggests we should go big for a RB (Hakimi) and look for a cheaper LB option(Cucurella)
