Arsenal fans credit Pablo Mari for his performance against Everton

Arsenal suffered a defeat at home to Everton on Friday night in the Premier League – but some of the club’s fans on Twitter did at least give their defender Pablo Mari some credit for his individual effort.

The Gunners were beaten 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium by opponents Everton, surely ending any chances of finishing in the European positions in the league table this season.

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno netted a poor own goal in the 76th minute to decide the match, as he let a simple cross from Richarlison spill through his gloves into the net.

It means that Mikel Arteta’s side stay ninth in the league standings, with seventh-placed Liverpool seven points above them now with a game in hand.

If the north London club are going to have European football next season, it looks like they’ll need to go all the way in the Europa League competition with a semi-final tie with Unai Emery’s Villarreal coming up. However, if they do win that semi-final, they’ll face the winner of Manchester United and Roma in the final.

A selection of Arsenal supporters on social media believe Mari was at least a bright spark in their disappointing result.

The 27-year-old left-footed centre-back did well to keep striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin quiet, but going forward Arsenal were so ineffective without senior attackers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Here are some Gunners fans discussing Mari:
