Arsenal round-up: FA Cup victory; Wenger discusses Perez future; Jardim’s Premier League aspirations
. They only won 2-0, but they came up against a determined non-league side and the Gunners will be pleased that they avoided embarrassment. Their goals were scored by Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott, with the latter’s being his 100th goal for the club. It was a great spectacle for the neutral, but the North London club must now move on and re-focus on their league campaign.
Arsene Wenger’s men are now set to meet Lincoln City for a place at Wembley. They should prevail, which will put Arsenal into the last four of the competition and provide them with a great opportunity to lift the FA Cup trophy. This could be the French manager’s last in charge of the club and he deserves to bow out on a high. It may not be the one that Arsenal supporters were targeting this season, but they can’t afford to turn their nose up at it either. They have been provided with a relatively easy route to the semi-final stage and they now must take advantage of that.
Lucas Perez impressed last night and he seems to do so every time that he gets on the pitch. The competition is fierce at Arsenal and the Spaniard may not have the right mentality to succeed at the club. According to speculation, he is unhappy at the lack of first-team opportunities since his move to North London and he is rumoured to be looking for a way out. .
“Yes, he is pushing on the door but I have many strikers. I have [Olivier] Giroud, [Danny] Welbeck, [Theo] Walcott, Alexis [Sanchez] and Lucas.
“It is true that he deserves a go because he scores goals and is a good player.”
The next few months will decide whether the former Deportivo man has a future at the club. He is an exciting player and one that can operate in several different positions. His versatility and pace are the reasons why he was targeted by Arsenal during the summer, but his mentality is preventing him from settling in at the club. If he was patient and worked hard behind the scenes, he would get more chances in the first team. He hasn’t done enough in his career to demand a regular first team place and he needs to wait for his opportunity. If he doesn’t want to, then Arsenal would be better off without him.
There will be a number of managers being linked with the Arsenal post over the coming weeks and every story needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. .
“Well, I think that all managers and players want to coach and play at the highest level and, today, the Premier League is perhaps the biggest national league in Europe and everyone would like to have the opportunity to coach here.”
Arsenal supporters may want to keep a close eye on Monaco’s trip to Manchester City this evening and see how Jardim asks his team to play. They are a very attacking outfit and he could be a good fit to be Arsene Wenger’s successor. It isn’t a surprise that he wants to manage in the Premier League at some point, but he will be facing a lot of competition to land the hot-seat at the Emirates Stadium this summer if it becomes available.
