Arsenal eyeing ‘sensational’ £39m forward likened to Andriy Shevchenko

Arsenal have been linked with a swoop for Getafe’s Borja Mayoral in recent days.

The Gunners have struggled on the attacking front this reason and could do with a clinical target man to put away more of their chances.

According to , Arsenal have launched a £22million bid to sign the 26-year-old striker.

However, the report claims that the La Liga outfit have turned down the Gunners’ offer and want around £39million.

Arsenal have apparently been tracking Mayoral since November following his impressive first half of the 2023-24 season.

The former Spain Under-21 forward, who swapped Real Madrid for Getafe in 2022, has 14 goals and one assist from 22 outings in all competitions this term.

There’s no doubt that Arsenal could do with bolstering their attacking ranks. At present, they’re not as clinical in the final third as a title-challenger ought to be.

The likes of Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen have been linked with the Gunners, but both of these players are likely out of reach for Arsenal during the January transfer window.

Mayoral seems like a slightly more attainable player this month, even though Getafe will likely not be willing to sell mid-season when they’re still pushing for Europe.

Arsenal target Borja Mayoral is an ‘essential tactical architect’

Much like Martin Odegaard, Mayoral was previously at Real Madrid and much was expected of him, but he’s only really starting to shine now he’s no longer on the Bernabeu books.

Scouting outlet sung his praises in an article from just a few weeks ago.

The described him as a ‘player whose intelligence on the field goes beyond his goal-scoring ability.

‘His strategic positioning, off-the-ball movements, participation in building play, defensive work, aerial play, and tactical adaptability form a comprehensive set that enriches his team’s tactical performance.

‘Borja Mayoral emerges not only as an effective forward but also as an essential tactical architect in the pursuit of football success.’

When Mayoral was coming through the ranks, Jacek Kulig of said he had the ‘combined playing styles of Andriy Shevchenko & Gonzalo Higuain’.

Meanwhile, agent Davide Lippi told in 2021 after helping bring the player on loan to the Eternal City: “Borja is a sensational lad.

“He’s an exemplary professional, you can tell that he’s played in a massive club such as Real Madrid before.”

More recently, described Mayoral as a ‘confident finisher with a good amount of pace and strength to handle himself up against physical defenders’.

Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks on this front and whether Arsenal make another push for Mayoral before the January transfer window shuts.
