Arsenal cannot afford to sell their best player to Manchester United again

According to pundit Andy Goldstein, speaking on the show ‘The Sports Bar with Andy Goldstein’ on Monday night, Manchester United are lining up a £70 million bid for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Goldstein said the £70 million figure “is what I’m being told. There’s a first offer. He’s only got two years left and in a year’s time he can go.”

The Red Devils may well be on the hunt for a new man to lead the line. Romelu Lukaku has failed to consistently impress since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2017. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know that his side need an elite goalscorer in order to get back into the Champions League.

The 30-year-old Gabonese striker is certainly elite level. That is exactly why the Gunners cannot afford to let him go at any price this summer, certainly not to big rivals like Manchester United. Arsenal also find themselves outside the Champions League and in need of a way back in. Aubameyang ought to be central to Unai Emery’s plans for achieving that ambition.

Aubameyang was a joint-winner of the Premier League golden boot last season, with 22 goals. He clearly still has plenty left to give and his quality is required at the Emirates Stadium.

The north London outfit have made the mistake of selling their best striker to the Old Trafford club before. Robin van Persie scored 30 league goals for the Gunners over the course of the 2011/12 campaign. That summer he was sold to Manchester United and went on to fire them to the title in the subsequent season. Arsenal cannot afford to let history repeat itself and hand their rivals such a potent weapon again.
