Could the arrival of Davinson Sanchez see Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld join Chelsea?
As announced on Tottenham’s , Ajax centre-back Davinson Sanchez has joined the London outfit, subject to a work permit.
This represents Spurs’ second signing of the summer and it comes at a club-record cost. report that Sanchez cost £42 million, which eclipses the that Tottenham paid for Moussa Sissoko last season.
This news, however, has been overshadowed by rumours and speculation linking one of Spurs’ key players with a move away.
Centre-back Toby Alderweireld is reportedly a target of Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Champions, according to , have been in contact with Tottenham over a move for the Belgian defender.
The Alderweireld is apparently unhappy with his current £49,000-per-week contract, with the 28-year-old supposedly wanting more than twice as much. The Belgian is no closer to agreeing a new deal and Chelsea are keen to offer the centre-back a ‘double your money’ deal.
If a wage rise is something Alderweireld is after, then a Spurs exit may be on the cards, with a short move to Stamford Bridge a possibility. The Blues are a club by no means shy of spending money and are, therefore, a destination at which the Belgian defender would most definitely receive an increased pay packet.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been after a defender for a while, with Chelsea supposedly interested in Southampton centre-back Virgil van Djik, as reported recently by the .
However, Alderwield also appears to be on Conte’s radar, and there are few better defenders in the Premier League who Chelsea could be linked with. A crucial part of Tottenham’s team and a huge reason for Spurs’ successes in recent seasons, the 28-year-old has been in the conversation as the Premier League’s best defender, and rightly so.
From Tottenham’s perspective, with the imminent arrival of Sanchez, perhaps they can afford to let their Belgian star go. Although he is one of their best options, it makes little sense in keeping a player that doesn’t want to be at the club, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now well covered if he did jump ship.
Sanchez joins Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Kevin Wimmer and Cameron Carter-Vickers, the youngster, all of whom are capable of playing in a centre-back role.
Add to this the fact that Tottenham’s new signing offers power and pace, traits which Alderweireld doesn’t necessarily provide, replacing the latter with the former could prove to be good business in the long-term.
