Arne Slot shares what Harvey Elliott needs to do for more game time at Liverpool

Liverpool boast an impressive squad which, combined with Arne Slot’s management, has put the team in a very healthy position this season.

The Reds are favourites to win the Premier League title as they sit six points clear at the top and are also through as Champions League group winners.

However, Liverpool’s high standards this season mean that players who would normally be shoo-ins for regular starts are finding themselves on the fringes.

Harvey Elliott is one such player. The 21-year-old has shown he has what it takes to shine at the highest level, but he’s struggling for game time.

Slot, speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Ipswich Town, explained what Elliott needs to do in order to get more game time.

Arne Slot urges Harvey Elliott to keep up the good work at Liverpool

Slot, speaking to the Liverpool media team, acknowledged that Elliott has a lot of competition in midfield this season.

Elliott is up against Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo for a spot in the midfield, plus some youngsters waiting in the wings.

Slot claimed that, providing Elliott keeps working hard on the training ground and in games, his game time will “probably” increase.

“Keep bringing performances in like he did and keep working as hard on the training ground as he’s doing as well,” said Slot when asked what Elliott needs to do for more game time.

“I always say to the players it’s not only about you, it’s also about the competition you are in.

“And in his situation he’s in competition with five very good midfielders that you know and there are a few youngsters coming through that are very talented as well but they are not close to playing time yet.

“But he’s in competition with Wata, with Ryan, with Curtis, with Macca and himself, so these are the midfielders we have at the moment.

“He has to bring performances like he does and then playing time will probably increase.”

What Elliott has said about his Liverpool future

Whenever a top player finds himself struggling for game time and opportunities, the rumour mill will invariably start spinning.

This has been the case with Elliott, who has been linked with Borussia Dortmund and Brighton & Hove Albion in recent weeks.

However, the £4million signing from Fulham has made it clear that he’s not leaving Anfield.

“I think it’s pretty clear to be honest, I’m not leaving,” he said on Amazon Prime after the midweek Champions League win over Lille.

“You know, I think I said it in an interview the other day, this is my team, this is my club. I’m a massive fan, you know, and we’re in a great position so far this season…

“I think without saying anything on social media, to be honest I didn’t really see all the stuff.

“It was just a few things my friends have said to me, calling me up left right and centre, ‘Are you going here, here, here?

“It’s always going to happen in January, especially after being out for a long time and not always really playing as much as I want to, but you know – that’s football.”

Liverpool fans have been calling for Elliott to get more game time, and hopefully that’ll be the case in the coming weeks and months.
