Arne Slot says £1.5m Liverpool player ‘could have done better’ in moments during Arsenal friendly

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has had his say on the performance of one player in their win against Arsenal.

The Reds faced the Premier League runners-up in Philadelphia late on Wednesday night, and they managed to pick up a 2-1 victory.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Fabio Carvalho doubled their lead 11 minutes before half-time. Arsenal were the better side in the second half, but Liverpool held on and won the game.

One player in particular impressed many people and Slot liked his display too. However, there were parts of his game that the Liverpool boss didn’t enjoy too much.

Arne Slot issues mixed Harvey Elliott verdict after Liverpool vs Arsenal

Harvey Elliott started in midfield for Liverpool against Arsenal in Philadelphia.

Slot named a fairly strong starting lineup, but his side were put under pressure early on by Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

However, Liverpool grew into the game and after just 13 minutes, Elliott sent Salah through on goal. The Egyptian, as he often does, found the back of the net.

Then, in the 34th minute, Elliott was involved again. This time, he provided a beautiful assist to Carvalho, who volleyed the ball past Karl Hein in goal.

Elliott could’ve and probably should’ve had another assist as well, but Diogo Jota could only hit the woodwork after getting on the end of the 21-year-old’s pass.

Two assists against one of the best sides in the world is not a bad return at all, and Slot is happy with Elliott. However, he claimed that the youngster could’ve done a lot better in a few actions.

Slot told : “He had two great assists, but what I believe is that the team created these assists for him as well. Playing out from the back, getting him in the right positions – or another No.10. Then it is up to him to bring the most of these situations and he did that today with two assists.

“If I am a bit hard on him, I think there were two or three other situations where he could have done better. But that’s what the team is doing for him; we make sure he and the other ones like Mo and like Fabio come in the right positions where they can show their quality.

Harvey Elliott’s stats vs Arsenal are so impressive

Elliott has come a long way over the last few years.

The 21-year-old, who Liverpool paid an initial £1.5 million to sign (), has always been an exceptional talent, but he has struggled for consistency.

However, Elliott looked a lot better in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club, and it looks like he has carried that form into pre-season as well.

In his 72 minutes on the pitch, the Englishman had 37 touches of the ball and completed 25 of his 28 attempted passes, thus maintaining an impressive 89 per cent passing accuracy.

Elliott registered four key passes, created three big chances and picked up two assists. He earned an 8.4/10 rating against Arsenal – the best on the pitch ().

The 2024/25 campaign could be a big one for Elliott, and we’re sure Liverpool fans are excited to see what he can do under Slot in the coming months.
