Armstrong’s international form showed Hughes exactly what he can do
Stuart Armstrong looked an astute signing by Southampton in the summer as they took advantage of the fact that the transfer premiums which have cropped up all over the transfer market have not yet afflicted Scottish football.
But despite the fact that the Saints have struggled for midfield creativity and drive, Armstrong has not been granted a run of games to prove his worth to Mark Hughes.
So he travelled off on international duty with Scotland knowing he had a point to prove to Hughes and duly provided a reminder of exactly what he can do.
Armstrong was inspirational as Scotland won 4-0 in Albania, before pulling all the strings in the thrilling 3-2 home win over Israel, which sealed top spot in the UEFA Nations League group.

It would be perplexing if Hughes was to continue to ignore Armstrong and he cannot afford to get his team selection wrong against Fulham this weekend.
The contrast between the Whites’ decision to twist during the international break; sacking Slavisa Jokanovic and appointing Claudio Ranieri and the Saints’ call to stick with Hughes is tough to ignore.
Being beaten by a side with the new manager bounce may prove too tough for Hughes to survive and he should include Armstrong in the side looking to keep him in a job.
