Argentina national media deliver their verdicts on Tottenham’s Cristian Romero as they reach Copa America final

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero has now progressed to his second Copa America final with Argentina.

Ange Postecoglou’s starting centre-back won the competition with his country back in 2021, the year before Romero also then lifted the World Cup.

And spearheaded by Lionel Messi, who scored the second goal in the 2-0 win against Canada, it seems as if Argentina could be poised for more success.

Romero will face either Uruguay or Colombia in the final, which will take place on Monday.

The defender had made it clear that he would like to then represent his country at the Paris Olympics.

However, Postecoglou wasn’t keen on the idea, and Romero wasn’t named in Argentina’s Olympic squad.

That being said, Argentinian media have now been reacting to Romero’s performance, who played all 90 minutes of the clean sheet.

Cristian Romero praised for his ‘security’ as Argentina reach Copa America final

shared their rating of Romero’s display, explaining that the centre-back was quietly effective.

They wrote: “Without standing out so much, he was once again the one who would bring the crowd to their feet with a tackle or a save.”

then shared similar sentiments, saying that Romero was a ‘real guarantee’ at the back.

And something that has improved under Postecoglou’s guidance, Romero’s passing, was also praised in the review.

They wrote: “A real guarantee in Argentina’s back line. He won almost all the duels and offered a clear outlet with the ball at his feet.”

Tottenham target Jonathan David nearly sent off for Cristian Romero foul

Interestingly, mentioned a moment with Tottenham-linked Jonathan David during the game, who started up top for Canada.

Tottenham have made an enquiry to sign David this summer, who could be available for a very reasonable sum.

Playing for Canada, David was nearly sent off for a foul on Romero, who completely missed the ball and made significant contact with Romero’s thigh.

Clarin wrote: “His usual security and presence. It’s impressive how he marks and manages the timing. He felt pain with a strong foul by David.”

So whilst Radu Dragusin also impressed for Romania at Euro 2024, it seems as if the defender has a long way before he’ll be in contention to usurp Romero – who keeps going from strength to strength.

Romero always had world-class ability, but was simply undermined by his ill-discipline.

But with that aspect of his game removed, the defender can still achieve so much with Tottenham.
