Argentina international wants Newcastle deal, but Everton have got to consider him
Federico Fernandez has been quoted as saying that he is ready to sign a new deal at Newcastle United after an excellent start to the 2019-20 campaign, as his current deal expires in the summer. But should Everton consider elbowing The Toon aside?
, the 30-year-old is keen to enter talks with Newcastle over a new contract. His current deal is due to end at the end of the season, but has arguably been one of The Toon’s most reliable players this season.
With Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune on the sidelines through injury, the Argentina international – who was signed by Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2018 for £6million () – has started the last eight Premier League games.
In that time, Steve Bruce’s side have won four games and propelled up the table after a difficult start. Fernandez has even scored two goals, and he stated that he wants to open talks over a new deal: “Yes, we need top open talks. It’s a great club.”

But, should Everton consider a move for Fernandez? His impressive form for Newcastle, in a side that allow teams to come on to them and play on the counter, has been excellent. He has plenty of Premier League experience, clocking up 147 games.
The Toffees have little cover at centre-back. Phil Jagielka returned to Sheffield United and Kurt Zouma’s loan from Chelsea ended, leaving Everton with just Michael Keane and Yerry Mina. Mason Holgate is proving to offer decent cover.
So, Everton need a centre-back to provide top-quality cover for Keane and Mina. What better move to sign an Argentina international, with plenty of Premier League experience, on the cheap from a rival? Everton should consider Fernandez.
