Are these three stars Liverpool’s alternatives to Mario Götze? feat. Dortmund wizard
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
when he was still on the books of Shaktar Donetsk, Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s signature was eventually secured by Borussia Dortmund. Along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus, Mkhitaryan has been a real star in the Bundesliga this season for Jurgen Klopp’s former club. In all competitions, he has struck the back of the net an impressive 18 times and also bagged 20 assists, putting him up with the best in his position.
Under Jurgen Klopp for two seasons before the former Mainz boss left the club in 2015, he had displayed the promise of brilliance without ever really fulfilling to the maximum. When Liverpool faced off against Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Klopp will have been able to observe just how much the Armenian international has grown as a player since their days working together, and may have encouraged him to attempt to reconnect the partnership.
Mkhitaryan is most frequently deployed behind the main striker, able to use his first-class vision to create chances, but is also in the right position to fire powerful efforts goal-bound. He is hardly limited to this position however, often roaming free to pick up space between defenders, and Liverpool fans saw this at close quarters in their Europa League match-up, especially in the first leg.
Although he is undoubtedly an important component in the current Borussia Dortmund team, a move to a resurgent Liverpool team in the Premier League is a tempting proposition for all but the world’s elite, in addition to gaining the chance to work with Jurgen Klopp once more.
