Are these Spurs and West Ham flyers in pole position for England’s left-back spot?
The left-back role for England is arguably one of the strongest positions in the squad regarding the depth and quality of the full-backs that Roy Hodgson has to pick from. Since centurion Ashley Cole announced his retirement, the decline of some left-backs and the emergence of others has been evident, while many have come to the fore attempting to make that position theirs. Opportunities have also arisen for left-backs after the long term injury to Luke Shaw who suffered a serious leg break at the beginning of the season and could just make the cut for the Euros, fitness and return to action permitted. But which two left-backs will Roy take to the Euros?
Danny Rose
One of the key features of Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive season with Spurs this campaign has been the rotation of the full-backs and the role that they play in the system that the Argentinian employs. The offensive threat of the full-back is as of similar importance as their defensive capabilities. Pochettino has four young, hungry and energetic British wide defenders to choose from and one that has starred this season has been Danny Rose.
Rose’s form this season has been noticed and rewarded by Hodgson who handed the full-back his international debut in England’s stunning comeback against the World champions on Saturday night. Rose seemed a bit shaky early on, giving a couple of passes away but grew into the game. He showed the same attacking threat that has become expected of him at White Hart Lane but was also defensively sound against tough opposition. He definitely gave his cause of trying to get a spot in Hodgson’s Euros team no harm.
