Are Leicester City about to secure a £17 million move for Hull City’s Harry Maguire
If reports from last night are anything to go by, then Leicester City have allegedly put in a £17 million bid for highly-rated Hull City defender Harry Maguire to persuade him to the King Power.
It is believed that the Foxes are keen to complete a deal as soon as possible, amidst interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle and Tottenham, and are willing to offer him a five-year contract.
If a deal does go through then Maguire would prove to be the most expensive player ever to leave the Tigers, who are set to cash-in on big-money players as they aim to secure immediate promotion.
Does Maguire have what it takes for the Premier League?
In a word, yes.
Despite Hull City’s abject season, which ended in relegation back to the Championship at the first time of asking, the 24-year-old was a rare bright spark and it will be no surprise if he stays in the top-flight.
In a side that concedes 80 goals in just 38 matches – the worst record in the division – it’s not often that a defender is the one with all the plaudits, but Maguire has shown endless potential this season.
Strong in the tackle and physical in the air, he clearly has a natural no-nonsense approach to his football that makes him the ideal centre-back; in a way, he’s a throwback to old-school defending.
Yet there’s a lot more to the burly defender that meets the eye, as his close-ball control when driving out of defence and his ability to pick out a pass – long or short – is as good as a midfielder.
There’s a confidence to the young man’s play that has endeared him to the Premier League, completing more take-ons (29) in the top-flight than any other centre-back throughout last season, and in a Leicester City side that have improved under Craig Shakespeare he could feel right at home.
For somebody so inexperienced in the Premier League he settled extremely well, standing out in a frantic Hull City side by having a sense of confidence and composure whilst in possession of the ball.
And it’s this that, arguably, the Foxes have been needing for a while; at times last season their defensive line was all over the place, and Shakespeare’s right in thinking a big shake-up is needed.
It’s arguably that Maguire’s performances last season merited more than just a move to mid-table Leicester City, but at just 24-years-old there’s enough potential there to take him to the top one day
