Are Hull City going to make a move for Liverpool flop Lazar Markovic?
According to this morning, Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic could be in-line for a move to relegation-threatened Hull City after a poor spell at Sporting Lisbon this season.
It is believed that Liverpool and Sporting are currently in talks with Markovic over cancelling his season-long loan in the Portuguese capital, and Hull are hoping to capitalise and bring the Serbian back to the Premier League.
Markovic cost Liverpool £20 million back in 2014, with the 22-year-old once believed to be Europe’s newest rising star, but he struggled to lock down a first-team spot at Anfield.
Hull manager Marco Silva, who coached Estoril in the Portuguese league during Markovic’s time at Benfica, will be looking to secure a deal for the Serbian to boost his attacking options.
What would he bring to the KCOM stadium?
With Hull City currently the joint second-worst in front of goal in the Premier League (20 goals), the difference between survival and relegation will be finding goals from somewhere.
Markovic, despite not showing it much at Liverpool, still has the potential to turn into a potent attacking midfielder – and good news for the Tigers is that he’s very versatile too.
He’s naturally a left-sided player, and although his goalscoring record isn’t anything exceptional, he’s more than capable of threading passes in behind a defensive line, and this could prove to be useful with the likes of Abel Hernandez and Adama Diomande having pace to burn.
One of the major issues with Markovic that Silva will have to overcome is his confidence; out-of-favour at Anfield, and cast aside by Sporting – he wasn’t even in the Lisbon squad for their match with Maritimo this past weekend – the Serbian will be thinking his luck will never change.
Yet at Hull he would have the perfect opportunity to begin setting the record straight, hoping to have more of an impact on the Premier League than he did during his Liverpool spell.
It’s hard to forget that Markovic is still only 22-years-old, and still has the majority of his career ahead of him, so despite his poor few years jumping from club to club there’s certainly still hope for him.
Markovic could prove to be an inspired signing for Hull City, and it could turn out to be a huge turning point in his career if he can impose himself well and mastermind the great escape at the KCOM.
Is a move likely?
Providing that Liverpool, Sporting, and Markovic himself can agree on terms, it seems inevitable that the 22-year-old will be looking for a new side before the January transfer window closes.
It’s then up to Silva to snap up Markovic before another club enters the race; yet with Liverpool and Hull are already entering discussions over a loan deal until the end of the season, it seems that Hull is the likely destination.
After only making six league appearances for Sporting since the beginning of the season, with only two starts, Markovic will be wanting first-team football and Silva can promise him this.
Verdict
8/10 – After failing to reignite his stumbling career in Portugal, and with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp already possessing strength in depth in midfield, it’s possible that a move to Hull City could take place in the next few days. The only issue could be getting clearance from Sporting Lisbon to cancel his time in Portugal, but if that happens then it will only be a matter of time before Marco Silva acts.
