Are Chelsea realistic in targeting Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero?
have reported that Chelsea are interested in signing Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero after missing out on Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United. According to the outlet, the Blues have a “serious and strong interest” in the striker who has scored 169 goals for City.
The Argentina international, therefore, joins Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Torino striker Andrea Belotti as one of the targets to replace Diego Costa.
However, Aguero now heads Antonio Conte’s list of targets. And rightly so, the 29-year-old guarantees goals.
Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, he has been a consistent goal-scorer. In his six seasons in the England’s top division, Aguero has managed a remarkable 122 league goals.
With Diego Costa seemingly extradited by Conte and Lukaku having chosen United, Chelsea are desperate for a striker and Aguero could fill that role.
The Argentinian’s movement and experience is what sets him apart from other strikers in the Premier League. He finds pockets of space in and around the box and his finishing speaks for himself.
It is Aguero that is often responsible for finishing off stylish and fluent City moves and, with creative talents such as Eden Hazard, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas around him, he could easily do the same for the Blues.
Of course, Manchester City will be in no rush to get rid of their star striker. In the years since the Abu Dhabi United Group took over, the Citizens have had no reason to sell their best players as they are blessed with phenomenal finances and the on-field success to match.
Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has said: “Sergio Aguero is one of the best players in the world. We are a team that aspires to win every competition we compete in. Having Sergio Aguero as part of the squad is an absolute must. It has never been in doubt.”
His words suggest that the 29-year-old, who has led City to two Premier League titles in 2012 and 2014 as well as domestic cup success, is staying put. It remains to be seen how Pep Guardiola will use him next season, but City’s stance suggests he still has a role to play.
For Conte, however, this is a seemingly impossible signing. If Blues were to pull it off, it would be one of the buys of the window and it would certainly the Italian manager’s current headache up-top.
