Archie Gray says £39m Tottenham player has been ‘brilliant’ since he joined this summer

Tottenham Hotspur’s only permanent summer signing Archie Gray made his debut for the club on Wednesday night against Hearts of Midlothian.

The former Leeds United midfielder made the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier in the window and was immediately thrown into Ange Postecoglou‘s starting XI.

Tottenham cruised to victory at Tynecastle with the first half XI – which Gray was part of – taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

Known for his versatility, Gray was thrown in at centre-back alongside Oliver Skipp but looked the composed figure which Leeds fans will be all too familiar with.

Despite keeping a clean sheet alongside Skipp, there was another player which Gray wanted to single out for praise after the game following his first few weeks at the club.

Archie Gray says £39m Tottenham man has been brilliant to him

At the age of just 18, Gray will be looking towards some of the more experienced figures in the Spurs side for some guidance over the coming months.

He may not have looked like a player who was phased by wearing the lilywhite shirt on Wednesday night, but it has to be remembered just how young he is.

Postecoglou was left delighted with Gray’s display against the Scottish outfit after opening the game from centre-back.

But the 18-year-old was quick to share his appreciation for his teammates when speaking after the match in Edinburgh.

Speaking to Spurs Play, Gray shared specific thanks to right-back Pedro Porro for his help in defence.

They’re all they’re all brilliant, and they’ve all helped me so much, you know, especially, especially Pedro today,” said Gray.

“He’s been really helpful for me and I’ve not played centre-back before, and I thought he was really helpful for me.

“Especially everyone in training as well, not just on the pitch when we play pre-season games… at the training pitch every single day, everyone’s trying to help me, which I really appreciate.”

Pedro Porro going into the season with a point to prove

With over a year of experience now in England, Tottenham’s right-back is going into the 2024/25 campaign with a clear message to send.

Despite showcasing a brilliant 2023/24 season in the Premier League, Porro was not included in Spain’s Euro-winning squad.

Of course, Spain won the competition so many will say Luis de la Fuente got his decisions right in the build up to the tournament.

However, Porro provided Tottenham with four goals and seven assists last season in what was a seriously impressive term for the 24-year-old.

He has now had all summer to rest and recover with the defender hopefully using his Spain omission as fuel to take his game to an even higher level this season.
