Archie Gray absolutely loved 32-year-old Leeds United player’s performance vs Shrewsbury yesterday

Leeds United youngster Archie Gray was very impressed with goalkeeper Karl Darlow after yesterday’s EFL Cup victory.

Darlow social media after making his debut for Leeds last night.

The goalkeeper position has been a subject of debate for months at Elland Road.

Sam Allardyce’s arrival at Leeds towards the end of last season saw Illan Meslier lose his place between the sticks.

Joel Robles stepped into the side for the final four games, but he departed on a free transfer during the summer.

New manager Daniel Farke brought in Karl Darlow from Newcastle to provide competition for Meslier.

The young Frenchman was given the nod against Cardiff City on the opening day of the Championship season.

However, Darlow made his Leeds debut last night and Archie Gray was impressed with the 32-year-old.

It will be interesting if his performance last night was enough to see him retain his position in the side for Saturday’s trip to Birmingham.

Instagram after the match, Darlow said: “Debut [tick emoji] next round… @leedsunited.”

Leeds would have been worried when they went into half-time 1-0 down after not playing their best football.

There was nothing Darlow could have done about Shrewsbury’s goal.

Leo Hjelde gave Shrewsbury’s attacker way too much space and in his efforts to block the shot, it deflected off his leg and bounced over the stranded Darlow, off the far post and into the goal.

The Leeds comeback started shortly after the break when Ian Poveda’s shot was parried into the path of Joe Gelhardt for the equaliser before Pascal Struijk volleyed in the winner from a corner.

Leeds have been told they’ve got a huge talent on their hands in Gray, and Darlow and the rest of his teammates will be glad to see him thriving.

Tyler Adams has also specifically praised the teenager already this season.

He looks set to be a regular feature in the side, but it will be interesting to see if Darlow can follow suit.
