Appointing Italian manager reportedly keen on Celtic job might benefit Diego Laxalt

Walter Mazzarri is reportedly open to joining Celtic after leaving Serie A side Torino just over a year ago – and if the Hoops look to bring the experienced Italian to Parkhead, Diego Laxalt may find himself staying at Celtic beyond the summer.

Celtic are without a manager after Neil Lennon resigned last week, and plenty of big names have been linked with the role. The likes of Frank Lampard, Eddie Howe, Roberto Martinez and plenty of other names have been touted as possible appointments.

that another name could end up in the dugout, in the form of 59-year-old boss Mazzarri – who has the likes of Inter Milan and Napoli on his CV. More recently, he was sacked by Torino in February 2020.

Yet to find a new club, the latest report claims that he would be open to joining Celtic. It remains to be seen what Celtic’s stance is on Mazzarri ahead of appointing a manager – but one Celtic player might be keen to see the arrival of Mazzarri.

That is Uruguay international Laxalt. The South American left-footer spent time on the books at Inter under Mazzarri, before reuniting with the ex-Watford boss at Torino last season during a loan spell. Mazzarri has previously commented on him.

“I signed Diego when he was just a kid and I used him as a central midfielder at first,” Mazzarri said, . “Since then he’s been a left winger and a left back and he’s excelled in every position he’s been asked to play.

“Diego gives you lots of running and hard work. He never stops and always keeps going. He’s in peak physical condition. You could even use him as an attacking midfielder. He’s one of those players that are so useful, he could play in any position really.”

So, surely if Celtic hire Mazzarri – the Hoops will activate the permanent £9million clause in Laxalt’s loan-to-buy deal at Celtic, which was initially reported by Laxalt has been poor since moving to Glasgow.

The former Genoa man has clocked up 24 appearances for Celtic in all competitions but has lost his place in the side to Greg Taylor of late. It remains to be seen if he will be bought permanently by the Scottish champions.

But clearly, if Mazzarri joins the club in the coming weeks or months, surely he will look to convince Celtic that Laxalt needs to be signed permanently – given his enormous praise of the versatile left-footer in past?
