‘Anything but likely’: Director asked about chances of deal for 23-year-old from Liverpool this summer
Union Berlin director Oliver Ruhnert has admitted that it is looking unlikely that the Bundesliga side will be able to strike a deal for Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi this summer – .
Awoniyi has had an interesting time since moving onto the Reds’ books in 2015. The 23-year-old is still awaiting the chance to make his Liverpool debut.
That has been down to the Nigerian being unable to secure a work permit. He has been loaned out seven times.
His latest spell saw him join Union Berlin. It proved to be a mixed time for the youngster.
Awoniyi scored five times and provided three assists in 21 appearances. Unfortunately, his season was disrupted by an injury that ruled him out for a couple of months.
Interestingly, the door is now open for Awoniyi to make his Liverpool debut. .
So that may partially explain why Die Eisernen director Ruhnert did not sound hopeful when asked about keeping the Liverpool loanee.
“Nothing is ruled out, but in principle it is anything but likely,” he said, .

What Ruhnert’s response does arguably highlight is that Union Berlin would probably like to keep Awoniyi.
However, it is hard to see Liverpool loaning him out again. His record does not stand out. And his contract expires on Merseyside in two years (via ).
So it may make most sense to sell him permanently in the summer.
Perhaps Jurgen Klopp may want to take a look at Awoniyi in pre-season before making a final decision. That is the stance he is reportedly taking with Harvey Elliott.
Training with Liverpool will present the starlet with a chance to work with better players.
He has enjoyed some success out on loan. He reached double figures in two different spells in Belgium previously.
But having shown some promise this past season, perhaps it may be best for all parties if Liverpool sell him permanently this summer.
