‘Great quality’: Conte says Spurs player he’s started just once is ‘different’ to the rest of his squad
Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte, has claimed that out of favour winger Steven Bergwijn is ‘different’ to the rest of the players in his squad.
Bergwijn has only started one game since Conte took over from Nuno Santo earlier this season. Indeed, in the last three fixtures, the Dutchman has played . However, Bergwijn enjoyed a fine international break with Holland and got himself on the scoresheet.

And while he’s not expected to be in the starting XI for Spurs this weekend against Newcastle, Conte did have some kind words about the former PSV man in his press conference.
“We are talking about a player with great quality and potential. He’s different to the players we’ve got in the squad, 1v1 when the space is very short and he’s good to beat the man and create chances. I think Steven has great space for improvement and he has to give continuity. He needs to continue to work hard. He’s a player that can change the situation. He can create chances for himself and others,” Conte said
“I think he needs to believe in himself more. He needs to continue to work with and without the ball and help the team in every moment. Football is a team game and you have to be ready to help the team in every moment. For sure we are talking about another player who is doing important improvements.”
TBR’s View: Bergwijn Still Likely To Leave Tottenham
The Dutchman won’t want to sit about and not be playing under Conte, despite the nice words from the Italian. More so, if he’s playing and scoring for the national team, it will make him question his future even more.
Bergwijn does have qualities and Conte is right to point these out. But at Premier League level he’s never quite looked like doing it consistently.
Ultimately, that’s his downfall at the moment and unless that changes, the he will surely end up being moved on by Spurs.
