Antonio Conte says something ‘really strange’ happened during his time at Tottenham

Antonio Conte has admitted that celebrating finishing fourth place at Tottenham Hotspur was ‘really strange’.

The Italian parted ways with Tottenham back in March last year after an underwhelming 2022-23 campaign.

Spurs had crashed out of the Champions League, as well as both cup competitions, while their form in the league was patchy at best.

When many look back on Antonio Conte’s time at Spurs, they will likely remember his post-match rant following the 3-3 draw at Southampton. It ultimately led to his departure but he enjoyed a promising first season at Tottenham.

After taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo in November 2022, Conte eventually guided Spurs to an unlikely top-four finish.

But Conte has now told that he could not bring himself to over-celebrate the achievement, despite describing it as a ‘miracle’.

Conte on Tottenham’s top four celebrations

“For me, to celebrate fourth place and a place in the Champions League was really strange,” the former Spurs boss said.

“At the end of the final game against Norwich, I called my staff and said ‘pay attention, don’t be used to celebrating a Champions League place’.

“I was very clear. I said we did the maximum. From ninth to fourth place, with all the problems we faced, was a miracle.

“But we didn’t celebrate like it was a miracle because I am used to winning.”

It was certainly a brilliant achievement from Spurs to finish in the top four that season after a dismal start to the campaign under Nuno.

The fact that Tottenham pipped Arsenal to fourth place made it all the sweeter for Spurs supporters.

That probably played a big part in Tottenham’s celebrations on the final day. But you’d like to think that Spurs will be aiming higher than a top-four finish in the future.
