‘These players are improving’: Antonio Conte says three Spurs players have got so much better lately
Tottenham take on Brentford this weekend in the Saturday evening kick off and could find themselves already in fifth with Arsenal playing earlier in the day.
The Premier League season is entering the crunch period as the battle for European places and relegation reaches its conclusion. Tottenham, as we know, are right in the mix for the top four and face a number of huge games in the coming weeks.
However, Spurs manager Antonio Conte will need certain players to step up. More so at wing-back, with the bad news lately that the in-form Mat Doherty is missing the rest of the season. And Conte, speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash, has admitted that he’s been working hard with his wing-backs lately and is seeing an improvement.
“I think that we are talking about a role that is not so difficult now. Maybe tactically it’s an easier role to understand the way to play. For sure you need to have specific characteristics, to have a good engine, to be strong physically. This is very important because when you have the ball and you’re in possession you become a striker, like a winger, and when we are not in possession of the ball you become a defender,” Conte said to

“I think that these players are improving. We are talking about young players with a lot of space for improvement and we are working with them, with Emerson, Sergio, also with Sessegnon, but I hope from now until the end to have all the players available, especially in these roles otherwise it becomes very difficult to face this situation.”
Summer signing Emerson is of particular note. He has endured a tough time of things, with Doherty’s form keeping him out of the team more often than not. The next few weeks will be a chance for the Brazilian to really stake his claim.
TBR’s View: Tottenham Wing-Backs Crucial To Top Four Hopes
If you are playing in this Tottenham side under Antonio Conte, especially at wing-back. As Conte mentions in his comments, there are so many facets to your game you must have.
Luckily, Emerson, Sessegnon and Reguilon all have traits to help them. Doherty has probably led the way, but now is a chance for those three to prove their own point.
It’s good for Spurs and Conte that they are improving, and in time, they’ll surely only get better.
