Antonee Robinson’s international demotion shows the defender isn’t ready for the Everton spotlight
This week, on-loan Everton defender Antonee Robinson was to the United States’ U-23 squad for the upcoming international break.
The call-up to the U.S.’ Olympic qualifying team reveals that the young defender isn’t ready for the Everton spotlight just yet.
Robinson, who is spending this season on loan at Wigan Athletic, had earned a number of senior U.S. national team caps over the past months. Notably, Robinson played for the Stars and Stripes in high-profile friendlies against France, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.

Despite a decent substitute performance against Mexico, Robinson was constantly exposed by some of the world’s best attackers, enduring a torrid time against Brazil and Colombia when the left back was found out on the wing.
At just 21 years of age, playing for America’s U-23s may be the best route forward for Robinson in the international stage at the moment. However, while the defender fails to gain admission to his country’s senior set-up, his opportunities at Goodison Park appear limited.
With the arrival of Lucas Digne at Everton at the left back spot, it appears unlikely Robinson will be staking a claim for an Everton reprieve any time soon.
And added to Antonee Robinson’s international demotion, the Everton youngster is clearly not ready to make the step up to the Toffees’ first team.
