Angus Kinnear names four strikers Leeds looked at in January
Angus Kinnear that Leeds United explored the possibility of signing the likes of Che Adams, Dwight Gayle, Andre Gray and Jarrod Bowen in January before ultimately signing Jean-Kevin Augustin.
It was vital that the Whites landed a new goalscorer during last month’s window. Eddie Nketiah returned to Arsenal at the start of the month, leaving Marcelo Bielsa with one senior striker.
And it appeared for a long time as if the window may close without Leeds getting someone in. with just over a week remaining that the Whites had had a third bid for Adams rejected by Southampton.
However, Leeds would ensure that deadline day was nothing like 2019’s offering by getting Augustin through the door with days to spare.
It looks to be a major coup for Leeds to land the Frenchman. And following the window’s closure, the club’s chief executive offered an insight into some of the other names they looked at, including confirming that the Whites were indeed in for Adams.
“So I know the window was dominated with headlines around Che Adams, Dwight Gayle, Andre Gray and Jarrod Bowen,” .
“Actually, they’re all avenues that we explored. But you find out quite quickly whether they’re available or not available. Although the media speculation ran and ran, actually all those clubs said those players weren’t available pretty early on.
“I think the only one who left was Jarrod. He was always going to go to a Premier League club because he wanted to play in the Premier League. And based on what Hull received for him, he was always only going to be able to be afforded by a Premier League team.”
TBR View – Leeds fans will appreciate club’s ambition
The club’s critics may attempt to argue that it is very easy to make enquiries for marquee names, but it is another thing to actually sign them.
However, most of the Elland Road faithful will surely appreciate the ambition. Three of those players are attached to Premier League clubs.
As Kinnear notes, Bowen moved to West Ham on deadline day for over £20 million (via ).
It would have been fantastic for Leeds had they managed to land any of the quartet. But the move for Augustin also looks to have the makings of a brilliant piece of business.
