Angus Kinnear comments on Ben White, says Leeds ‘close’ to making signing

Angus Kinnear has told Sky Sports News (Thursday, 09:50am) that Leeds United are “close” to completing a new signing this summer, and commented on their pursuit of Brighton defender Ben White.

White, 22, was an integral part of the Leeds side that finished the 2019-20 campaign at the top of the Championship table. He played all 46 league games, and the three FA Cup and Carabao Cup fixtures.

But Leeds failed to include a permanent clause in his contract, and he has returned to Brighton – where he is training. The Whites are reportedly said to have tabled a third offer worth £25million this summer.

However, Leeds have been linked with alternatives in the form of Tottenham’s Juan Foyth, River Plate’s Lucas Martinez Quarta and Freiburg’s Robin Koch. Kinnear said Leeds are “close” to signing a potential replacement.

“Ben had a wonderful season for us last season and he is a player we rate very highly. We know the fans love him and Ben enjoyed his time here. We want him permanently, but we must be respectful at Brighton,” Kinnear said.

“They’re have been discussions, but if it is not Ben White then we have other options that are at advanced stages and we will are close to one of those soon.”

TBR’s view – If not White, then who?

White is clearly the overriding favourite not just among fans, but for the board too. However, if Brighton are adamant in keeping him – then the three aforementioned names could come into play.

Foyth is Argentine, can play at right-back and has Premier League experience. But it is fair to say he has struggled when given a Premier League chances. Potentially one for Bielsa to improve.

Quarta is an Argentina international too, but has only ever played for River. Koch is the best option – but likely to be the most expensive – given he is one of the Bundesliga’s best up-and-coming talents, and has Germany caps.
