Angus Kinnear aims dig at Manchester United over Leeds new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin
as having a dig at Manchester United over their reported last-minute attempt to hijack Leeds United’s move to sign French striker Jean-Kevin Augustin.
Augustin, 22, has signed a loan-to-buy deal at Leeds from German Bundesliga outfit RedBull Leipzig this month – finally seeing Leeds bring in a striker to replace the loss of Eddie Nketiah. Ian Poveda and Elia Caprile have also joined the club.
Manchester United signed Daniel James from Swansea City in the summer, six months after the Wales international came within an inch of signing for Leeds in January 2019. James even picked a shirt number at Leeds, the number 21 shirt.
Now, Leeds chief executive Kinnear wrote in his programme notes – as quoted by Leeds Live – that a certain Premier League side should be “questioning their scouting department” after Augustin ignored reported interest from Old Trafford.
“It was telling of Jean-Kevin’s quality that a Premier League club tried to hijack our move for him at the 11th hour,” “That team’s board should now probably be questioning their scouting department as to why their recruitment strategy is based on reacting to newspaper reports of whom Leeds might be targeting.
“It was a testament to Jean-Kevin and his agent’s commitment to Leeds United that their heads weren’t turned.”
TBR’s view – Augustin a coup, and even more so given PL interest
The signing of France Under-21 international Augustin is certainly a coup, especially given he has more than 30 appearances for PSG on his CV – as well as 20 goals in 67 appearances for RedBull Leipzig.
For Leeds to convince Leipzig to cancel his Monaco loan and let him move to a second-tier side in Leeds is astounding. It is even more impressive, given that they convinced Augustin to ignore Manchester United’s reported interest.
